My Favorite Venue Spring Wrap-up Pt 3

Now for some other kinds of music, in back-to-back shows, May 16 & 17.

Beginning with a group I’d heard of but whose music I’d never really heard before: Cowboy Junkies. Now there’s a name to conjure some interesting notions of what they might be like. And their music actually fits –  moody, dark and mysterious songs with a tinge of country by way of Canada, beautifully performed by 3 siblings, Margo Timmins – etherial and smokey vocals, Michael Timmins – edgy guitarist who writes their songs, and Peter Timmins – drummer sublime, joined by bassist Alan Anton and multi instrumentalist Jeff Bird. True to the opioid part of their name (I’m kidding) Margo forgot lyrics a couple of times, tossing it off with a laugh and endearing herself even more with the audience. A musical experience like no other I’ve encountered before, hypnotically compelling and affecting.

Fans of blues great Robert Cray filled the house and loved every minute of his 90+ minute show. Over a 40+ year career, he has carved out a unique take on the blues, with original arrangements, lyrics that connect, passionate singing and guitar slinging, throwing in some funk and generally keeping things cranked up and hot. I think this was his fifth or sixth show at the Lobero. It is obviously one of his favorite venues too.
