Almost all the choreography for Doug Varone and Dancer’s new work is getting close to completion and the mood on the Lobero stage is very upbeat. Serious work adding, perfecting and tweaking is punctuated by bursts of laughter and joking as Doug and dancers experiment and improvise within the various sections of the piece and the transitions between them, each inspired by the wide variety of musical numbers in Leonard Bernstein’s elaborate score from the movie version of “West Side Story.” Although not adhering to the movie’s narrative story line, each part is quite different and tells its own story of movement and emotion, with purely abstract dance coming from inside Doug Varone and Dancers and going “Somewhere” new. Don’t miss it if you love Bernstein’s score and are adventurous enough to discover new meaning in this iconic American music. World Premiere September 6 & 7 at the Lobero Theatre. Tickets: lobero.org or 805-963-0761.
