Local Pastor Victor Bell and members of the UCSB Gospel Choir led members of the community in a Gospel sing-in as a prelude to a performance by the incredible Soweto Gospel Choir. The plaza outside Campbell Hall reverberated with mighty sounds of praise and joy as hundreds joined in the singing and got a lesson in African American clapping (as opposed to “white folks clapping) as well as a little history of the innovators and traditions in this distinctly American melding of musics and cultures. A rousing and fitting teaser for the group from Africa where the roots of Gospel are deep.
