Ensemble Theatre Company artistic director Jonathan Fox has come up with a bold stage adaptation of Woody Allen’s 1992 film “Husbands and Wives” which is (surprise) littered with neurotic New Yorkers. There’s a lot of philandering and dithering over mid-life crisis induced craziness, though Allen’s alter ego author and professor Gabe Roth, manages not to succumb to temptation in spite of a perfect opportunity with a young female student who has a thing for older guys. It’s all trademark Allen with plenty of laughs and irony, and Mr. Fox has come up with an innovative take on the hand-held camera “interview” portions of the movie, seamlessly woven into the action. World Premiere October 5th at the New Vic Theatre in the Santa Barbara Theater District with a superb cast.
