UCSB Arts & Lectures presented two very different masterclasses, one musical and one literary. Pianist Murray Perahia is a very hard task master when he conducts a masterclass, which is all to the good for the lucky student who is willing to absorb his wisdom. He has very specific ideas about how a piece of classical repertoire should be played and makes pointed recommendations about physical technique and aesthetic considerations like color and dynamics, all in the name of creating beautiful and compelling music.
Author Lalia Lalami’s lecture at Campbell Hall wasn’t billed as a class, but while detailing her research for her acclaimed historical novel “The Moor’s Account,” she imparted so much fascinating history and detailed information about Spanish colonialism in the Americas (as well as colonialism in general), race and human nature, that any astute listener couldn’t help feeling enlightened and educated.
