Berthold Brecht’s “The Caucasian Chalk Circle” is a multilayered exploration of human nature. The good, the bad, the ugly and the beautiful, all wrapped in a wide-ranging play that covers revolution, corruption, politics, and the power of compassion and love. Informed by the aftermath of the Russian revolution and the horror of World War Two, culminating in a trial loosely based on the Old Testament’s judgement of King Solomon and other ancient tales of the use of chalk circles to determine fate. This is an ambitious undertaking for UCSB’s Theater & Dance Department which is sure to showcase the best of their talented and dedicated students and faculty. Look for an amazing set and be prepared to be challenged and thoroughly entertained!
