Young Jewish American writer Jonathan sets off to Ukraine to find the woman who saved his grandfather from the Nazis. He hires an America obsessed young Ukrainian with a wonderfully warped take on the English language, his “blind” grandfather (who drives) and their flatulent dog Sammy Davis, Jr. Jr. They set off on a road trip to find the Shtetl Jonathan’s grandfather came from, which is not on any maps, in the hope of finding this woman to whom he owes his existence. What begins as a comedy becomes a moving drama as more and more is revealed about the Ukraine, its citizens and their role in the Holocaust. Ensemble Theatre’s new production of Simon Block’s adaptation of Jonathan Safran Foer’s best-selling autobiographical novel, features spectacular scenic design and lighting, great acting and an engaging ride from sardonic comedy to a moving dramatic discovery. Now through April 28th at the New Vic Theatre.
