When Jefferson Airplane was grounded in early 1969 while Grace Slick recovered from throat surgery, Hot Tuna was born so the guys in the band could continue to play live. Once the Airplane took off again, Hot Tuna continued and “opened” for the band, then recorded an eponymously titled live album in the fall of ’69. Founders Jack Casady and Jorma Kaukonen remained the core of Hot Tuna as it went thru numerous iterations, both electric and acoustic and are still at it today, playing as an acoustic duo or joined by Barry Mitterhoff on numerous stringed instruments. Jack and Jorma dropped by the Lobero on Feb. 17th for an all blues show that covered many of the classics and their fans ate it up.
