Next up: the Tierney Sutton Band returned for another great concert, this time applying the unique musical magic to songs from movies. Most of the songs performed in this show (from their new recording “ScreenPlay”) might be old chestnuts in the hands of any other band, but TSB has made them new and alive with their usual deftness and beautiful interpretations. The band is a singularly cohesive unit and true to jazz’s existential mission, deploying delightful improvisations over innovative and sensitive arrangements that breath new life into numbers like “The Windmills Of Your Mind” or “On A Clear Day You Can See Forever.” Now those are two songs I for one never thought I’d want to listen to with any seriousness, but Tierney and band sure pulled me in and gave them all new meaning.
Eleven nights later, legendary pianist Eddie Palmieri and his Latin Jazz Sextet wrapped up the 2018-19 Jazz at the Lobero series in scintillating fashion with a lively concert of Latin Jazz at its best. Hewing to the idea that this most syncopated and rhythmically invigorating form of jazz is really dance music, Mr. Palmieri urged the audience to get up and move, even venturing away from his instrument to do a little dancing himself. Some audience members followed his example while others preferred to dance in their seats, but all were thoroughly entertained and got their blood really circulating to a clave beat. Palmieri’s unique piano styling, hot blowing from the horn contingent and amazing percussion made for a perfect end to another great season of Jazz at the Lobero!
