Among the core principles guiding Boxtales Theatre Company’s Summer Camps are these: “… make it matter, make it fascinating, make it meaningful, and make it fun.” The culmination of Youth and Teen camps this year featured performances created by the participants – Hans Christian Anderson’s “The Snow Queen” for the first group aged 8 to 13, and Homer’s “The Odyssey” by the second group, aged 14 to 19. Participants are given tools to not only be successful in theater arts, but in the art of living and getting the most out of social and intellectual interactions in their lives outside the walls of theaters. Just the act of “becoming” someone else in a play fosters empathy and understanding. The signature Boxtales methods for bringing stories and myths to life were on full display July 12th and August 9th at the Marjorie Luke Theatre: using minimal props and costumes in unique ways, as well as carefully crafted editing of the original texts to make what audiences and actors experience matter, and to make it fun too. Kudos to all involved!
