Na Lei Huku I Ka Wekiu’s residency with UCSB Arts & Lectures featured a lesson and demonstration preceding their Campbell Hall show and an appearance at the Isla Vista Elementary school which included student and faculty participation. With the help of a tradewind-like breeze and many Hawaiian shirts, dresses, muumuus and leis, attendees had no problem getting into an island state of mind at the Campbell Hall plaza, and the Isla Vista students went ballistic when their teachers were called up to get a lesson of their own. They also learned about Hawaiian culture as well as a chant and some dancing, all while having big fun. There was a lot of aloha and calls for hana hou during the laul’a visit by this talented group. Mahalo!
