There have been plenty of bands, stars and future stars, but a singer-songwriter with an acoustic guitar has been a mainstay of Peggie Jones’s Sings Like Hell, often someone you’ve never heard before. The April show featured a 2 man iteration of Tender Mercies with Patrick Winningham filling the guitar and vocals role ably backed by Kurt Stevenson accompanying on vocals, bass, guitars and mandolin. Sweet-with-an-edge original music and a couple of great covers started off another exceptional evening of music. Following the duo was prolific humorist/iconoclast and superb musician Steve Poltz, who spent nearly as much time spinning crazy/hilarious tales as performing gems from his vast oeuvre of songs that you can tap your toes to and make you think at the same time, filled as they are with “oh yeah” and “heh, heh, heh” moments. Try on “Hey God, I’ll Trade you Donald Trump for Leonard Cohen” or “Silver Lining.” SLH is taking a hiatus until September, but if you care about seeing and hearing great music in the comfy seats of the Lobero Theatre – the best venue just about anywhere – make sure you get tickets when Peggy fires up this 21 year tradition again.
