Do Unto Others…

The title character of “Amelie,” as anyone who saw the 2001 French movie knows, had a little problem with the second part of that admonition as far as others doing unto her. She’s ready to help strangers and acquaintances but isn’t comfortable accepting help, or love, from others. Out of the Box Theatre Company’s most recent production of a charming stage musical adaptation of the movie was a departure from their usual edgy, somewhat outré material, but artistic director Samantha Eve and company have injected this bit of fluff with their signature quirkiness and verve to make for a satisfyingly engaging bit of theater, full of surprises, imagination and some magic. The Elton John singing puppet scene was especially effective. Herewith some evidence in the form of excerpts from an archival video I shot for the company.
