You can probably count the number top-notch of Jazz Big Bands on one or two hands, and the most sublime is no doubt the Maria Scneider Orchestra. Bandleader Schneider’s compositions and orchestrations are lush and evocative and unlike any others, taking listeners on beautiful and richly drawn journeys through the landscapes of her original mind. That combined with hot extended soloing by all members of the band makes for a live experience akin to the best of classical symphonic music, but with serious swing. Their Lobero concert on February 20 will surely be a highlight hard to top in what is shaping up to be another great year of live music in good old Santa Barbara.
