Multi Grammy-winner Joyce DiDonato was born in a suburb of Kansas City, but once she got a taste of opera while attending Wichita State University there was no looking back. A lyric coloratura mezzo soprano who sings with uncommon beauty, passion and a dash of humor, she has established herself as one of the best of her generation. Her UCSB Arts & Lectures recital, sensitively accompanied by pianist Craig Terry, featured excerpts from a Zarzuela, Ravel’s “Scheherazade,” Massenet’s “Cendrillon,” Granados’s “Tonadillas,” and arias by Handel (arranged by Mr. Terry) and Rossini. An entertaining and varied program held together by Ms. DiDonato’s engaging personality, and her powerful and purely beautiful voice. Nice flowers too!
