The Bruckner Orchestra Linz has a 200 year history, but had never appeared in Santa Barbara until this February when CAMA S.B. brought them to the Granada Theatre for a splendid concert of works by Schumann, Barber and Strauss. Under the baton of Ohio native Dennis Russell Davies this large and tightly knit orchestra from Austria dished up bold interpretations of what could have been ho-hum repertory in the hands of a less dynamic group. Scottish violinist Robert McDuffie gave an impassioned and very physical performance of American composer Samuel Barber’s Violin Concerto, Op 14, often kicking a leg in his exuberance and nearly rising off the stage. All in all, it was well worth the wait for Santa Barbara classical music fans.
