Arlo Guthrie’s “Alice’s Restaurant” just keeps on truckin’ and this may be third time he’s come to the Lobero to perform it – “back by popular demand.” This time had the added impetus of being the 50th anniversary of the movie based on the song as well as the 50th for Woodstock, Arlo’s first appearance at a big rock festival which featured an enduring fan favorite, “Coming Into Los Angeles.” A good deal of the show was filled with Arlo’s acerbic reminiscences and commentary about contemporary events, but the songs were the main attraction, including covers of Dylan’s “Gates of Eden” and father Woody’s “Gypsy Davy.” Guthrie was backed by long-time collaborator drummer Terry A La Berry and former collaborators Steve and Carol Ide, all members of Arlo’s backup band from the late seventies, Shenandoah. Another member of that band and staple of Arlo’s recordings of the last 30 years, son Abe was also on hand, and singer-songwriter daughter Sarah Lee Guthrie played a few of her songs and was joined by dad for the classic “Satisfied Mind.” Will there be a 60th anniversary tour? Probably.
