Choreographers Kevin Jenkins, Bill Soleau and Edgar Zendejas pooled their disparate talents to create State Street Ballet’s new loving homage to Charlie Chaplin and his little tramp, touching on his personal life and in the case of Zendejas, an abstract exploration of his place in the unconscious of the world, a kind of searching for Charlie. There was a good dose of slapstick with Charlie wannabe Ahna Lipchik nailing Chaplin’s signature quirky physicality while James Folsom portrayed the more poignant moments of his personal life. This is a brave new work filled with inventiveness and beauty that makes a moving tribute to a colossus of the 20th century.
