I usually don’t know what I’m in for when I show up at the Lobero to continue documenting the progress of a DANCEWORKS residency, and with Doug Elkins you really have to expect the unexpected. There will be humor, maybe some philosophical insights and always some very interesting dancing. Here’s a glimpse of the collaborative nature of the way Doug and his dancers build a piece, especially in this unique setting in which they have time to experiment, discuss and joke around, all the while creating something fresh and new. If you are following this adventure, you can see that “Kintsugi” goes far beyond the Japanese premise the name implies as this troupe of highly talented artists thread together disparate pieces and influences from around the world. The end result promises to be a fascinating journey/destination, distilled from 4 weeks of exploration.
