How things have changed. Back in the day, summer vacation was a time for fun. Admittedly, summer camp could be trying at times, but it was supposed to be fun, and often it was. Now these things called Summer Intensives have taken over and you go to summer “camp” with a serious purpose: to hone skills that will prepare you for adulthood – if not for a job, at least to gain valuable “life skills.” Ballet, which is already a pretty intense pursuit, both physically and mentally (remembering all those steps and choreography!) is a popular candidate for summer intensives. In fact, I have observed that while they do work hard, the participants also have fun. At least that is the case at State Street Ballet’s version of one, as the smiling faces on the kids at this year’s attest. The idea of fun as a child has changed a bit I guess… just like everything does.
