The October 15th edition of the UCSB Arts & Lectures series kicked off with video highlights of the many spectacular goals made by the two stars of the evening, the champion U.S. Women’s soccer team’s co-captains Alex Morgan and Megan Rapinoe, eliciting a standing ovation. A most impressive way to get a feel for the importance of these two highly gifted athletes and a pointed demonstration of the reason they and other women should be paid the same as men for doing the same work. After the video, they sat down in comfy chairs for some probing and spot-on questions from moderator, K-LITE and KDB radio host Catherine Remak. Morgan and Rapinoe responded with the utmost poise and intelligence, giving funny and serious answers and relating stories about their lives, their sport and their activism, much to the delight of girls and women of all ages (there were men too!) in the packed-to-capacity crowd. This was followed by questions from audience members who lined up in two long lines for the chance to interact with their heroes. After the formal proceedings, the two guests of honor agreed to pose for photos with donors, staff and members of the UCSB Women’s soccer team. Viva futbal!
