Stretching out on the grass in the Santa Barbara Courthouse sunken gardens with a picnic supper, listening to tunes spun by KCRW DJ Anthony Valadez, and then when it gets dark enough, watching Bogie at his hardest boiled. This Spade wasn’t there to do any gardening. He slapped around Peter Lorre, then he slapped around the dame with the bird who got in a few kicks herself. And that’s all before the ultimate baddie Sydney Greenstreet makes an appearance. What fun! First class B movie fare in glorious high-contrast black and white, and a sound system you could hear for blocks. Pass the potato salad.
