A coming together of seeming opposites. They have two different aesthetics and two different styles, but Shawn Colvin and Steve Earle both write and sing about the things that make life interesting, ironic and heartbreaking, among other things. On their recently released album “Colvin & Earle” there is a kind of rough tension between their harmonies that works really well, but their performance at the Lobero Theatre September 6th was a revelation. Stripped of the added instruments and Buddy Miller’s appropriately rowdy production on the recordings, they sang together even better and I for one liked the results much better. Maybe it’s because they’ve been on tour and have really honed the interplay between their voices, maybe it’s because you can hear that better with just their 2 voices and only 2 acoustic instruments, or maybe it’s the magic that can happen in live performances. Whatever it was, it was way cool.
