It's probably hard to imagine now, if one were to come to the material fresh (this is at least my third time reading the books, since the early '90s), the state of comics in the mid-'80s, but it was pretty bleak. There's a short strip about Pipo diving off one of the statues outside Palomar, and the last strip in the book, a short story about Heraclio, offers a tantalising glimpse of what was to come, and clearly Gilberto wrote these and thought he'd like to expand the characters.
